Idea
Another confidence builder (if you’re not the mantra kind of person) is to have at your mental “fingertips” a set of visuals of when you were in your element, feeling strong, at your peak performance.
To borrow from the media industry, it’s the equivalent of a “highlight reel” – the best clips from your library of experiences of when you were completely on top of your game and being your best self.
Example
One of my clients has all the skills it takes to be successful in her chosen career and more, but she told me she didn’t feel confident about going out there and being a rainmaker. I thought that surely the mantra would work for her, but when I described it, I could tell it simply did not resonate. That’s when we hit on the Highlight Reel idea. That really worked.
When she needs to tap into her inner confidence, the reel is there:
- Giving that speech in front of 100 clients and really nailing it (wearing the red jacket).
- Holding her ground in a tricky negotiation and winning the point in front of her whole team (grey suit this time).
- Being complimented publicly by her boss at the officers’ meeting for her team’s results (black suit).
- Getting the job offer from Firm A because she came up with an answer that even the interviewer hadn’t thought of (navy dress).
- Winning the debate team challenge under extreme pressure (school uniform).
What’s on your highlight reel?
Action
Put that mental highlight reel together, write it down if it helps, and “play” it to yourself every morning and tap into it as needed.
Then go out there and be that best version of yourself. Tap into that inner greatness – it’s all you!
